LAURENS COUNTY 4-Hers ATTENDED DPA
School is out, but that doesn’t mean a vacation for 26 Laurens County 4-H boys and girls. The 26 county winners in their club projects, were about as busy as they had ever been in their lives. They were putting finishing touches to the illustrated lectures and educational demonstrations which they hoped would help them earn district honors.
The Central Georgia 4-H project achievement was held June 18 and 19 at Rock Eagle. In addition to the 26 local delegates, there were about 700 boys and girls there from 25 other counties in the district.
And these were only junior and senior members, according to Mr. Paul Riddle, County Agent, and Miss Jane Stanford, County Extension Home Economist. Cloverleaf members (5th and 6th graders) had already held their achievement meeting.
Junior district winners, like the Cloverleaf winners, do not compete beyond the district level, but senior winners named at Rock Eagle do move on to State 4-H Congress in Atlanta where they will try for state championships and the right to represent Georgia at National 4-H Congress in Chicago.

2025 marks Harriett’s 30th year “Looking Back” in weekly columns offering readers a glimpse at history through local news clippings gathered from years gone by. The former schoolteacher began writing “85 Years Ago,” which she inherited from late Dublin Courier Herald publisher W.H. Champion, in 1995. Eight years later, she added a companion feature entitled “50 Years Ago,” treating Dublin-Laurens County natives to a more recent taste of nostalgia. The columns appear, respectively, in each Saturday and Tuesday edition.
