50 Years Ago: June 11, 1974

An open house celebrating the new Southside fire station was the top story on June 11 50 years ago.

FIREMEN HAVE NEW HOME
Firemen are a different breed. They work longer and sometimes more punishing hours than most men, but by and large they relish every minute of the waiting, frustration, danger, and toil their job presents because they are proud for firefighting is at times one of the most rewarding of occupations. There is deep satisfaction in preventing a home’s destruction, saving a life, or even rescuing the proverbial cat that has crept too far out on a limb. Dublin’s firemen are proud. They always have been, but now they have something new to crow about – a new home, and what a home it is. The new Southside Fire Station at the intersection of Saxon and South Jefferson streets has been in use for about two weeks, but the formal open house will be held this Sunday.
If the visitors Sunday are treated like this reporter was when he visited the station, Sunday’s visitors are likely to feel like they are being shown a first born child by the proud father. One fireman almost “old maidishly” refused to let a picture be taken of the dormitory section without first straightening the curtains and drawing them tightly.
“We wanted to build a functional building and one that was attractive,” City Manager Jack Crane said of the building. He added that the real credit belongs to Joe Hill, the building designer, and Simon Construction Company, the contractor.
City Council awarded the contract to build the station to Simon in early December on the firm’s low bid of $149,425. The building cost will be entirely paid with revenue sharing money.
The new station is part of a comprehensive effort by the city to upgrade the fire department for increased protection and consequently lower fire rates. Plans are being considered for the building of a second fire station on the northside of town. One idea which has cropped up is adding two smaller stations, one each in northwest and northeast Dublin.
Crane pointed out that the 40-hour week is coming for firemen and more and more the dormitory setup is being minimized. But one firehouse with barracks is necessary in a well-rounded department, and the Southside Fire Station should meet the department’s need for living quarters for many years, he added.
The new building’s dormitory facilities include a large living room with color television which adjoins a full-size modern kitchen. In the sleeping quarters there are fourteen beds separated by partitions. The sleek contemporary styled building is centrally air conditioned and heated.
The city’s two largest fire trucks are now assigned to the Southside Station with a six-man company. The smaller first response truck and two men stay at the old station at City Hall.
Crane was quick to remark that response time, the time it takes the fire department to reach a fire once a call is received, has not been lengthened to any part of town, as the smaller and quicker first response truck stays at the City Hall Station. Response time has been reduced to points in south Dublin, he said. The small fire truck can handle the first line duties at most fires with its 325 gallon water capacity, Crane explained.
In the equipment area of the new station there is room for four trucks in two bays. A watch room with alarms to local businesses and industries including a sophisticated ticker tape hook up with the VA Center is located in the equipment room. The ticker tape punches out a three digit code which tells the fie department on which wing and ward a fire may be at the VA Center.
The fire department upgrading program will also be helped along by a new 1,000 gallon pumper truck which is on order and should be delivered within six to eight months. In addition, the city is said to be looking around for another large truck to be added to the department before the one already purchased is delivered.
Probably the biggest step in upgrading the department is a recently landed grant for $75,000 to train nine new firemen for the Dublin Department and nine firemen from the Heart of Georgia area. Reports have it that an additional $18,000 has been granted the training program by the Heart of Georgia Manpower Planning Council. Each of the city’s present 19 firemen will also receive the instruction. Classes will be held in an upstairs classroom at the new fire station.
Visitors to the new station on Sunday will surely be surprised at the strides taken in the Dublin Fire Department. The old image of checker-playing firemen is gone, and as one person put it, the department is now “like the Los Angeles Fire Department you see on that T.V. show.”
The open house this Sunday will be held from 2 until 4 p.m. with plenty of refreshments.

Author

2025 marks Harriett’s 30th year “Looking Back” in weekly columns offering readers a glimpse at history through local news clippings gathered from years gone by. The former schoolteacher began writing “85 Years Ago,” which she inherited from late Dublin Courier Herald publisher W.H. Champion, in 1995. Eight years later, she added a companion feature entitled “50 Years Ago,” treating Dublin-Laurens County natives to a more recent taste of nostalgia. The columns appear, respectively, in each Saturday and Tuesday edition.
