50 YEARS AGO: May 14, 1974
Looking back at local news on this day 50 Years Ago, May 14, 1974: Courthouse may close on Saturdays; Sunday School rally planned
The Laurens County Commissioners agreed this morning on a motion by Commissioner Herbert Fordham and Commissioner Clerk Ellie J. Young that they should speak with elected officials in the county to get their feeling about a proposal to close the Courthouse on Saturdays. Young will ask the officials to send the Commissioners a letter stating their position on closing the Courthouse.
The new wage and hour law which is putting a squeeze on many employers was cited as the reason for considering the Saturday closing.
A public hearing will be held on June 4 at 10:00 a.m.in the commission office to hear public sentiment about closing the building.
In an unrelated matter the commissioners began looking at possibilities for housing the county agent’s office. A change in administration of the Federal building on the Courthouse Square has caused the commissioners to begin hunting new office space for the county agent.
Under the new General Services Administration control, which will take over the Federal building, the county will have to pay approximately $5,100 in yearly rent for the county agent’s office.
An architect from the University of Georgia Extension Service will meet with the commissioners within a week to discuss the practicality of building an office for the county agent, revamping the old post office building on East Madison Street, or remaining in the present office and paying the rent.
RALLY DAY PLANNED
Sunday, May 26th, will be a special day at the Pine Hill Methodist Church, being set as Sunday School Rally Day. Plans are being made to set a new record of attendance at Sunday School and Church. The goal is to have members and friends come for a reunion and fellowship.
