The Possum Hollow country fair grossed approximately $16,300 for building a new Buckhorn Methodist Church parsonage, of which $10,000 will be net profit to go toward the construction cost, Cecil Passmore, event chairman, announced.

Passmore estimated that another $15,000-$20,000 was spent at the fair’s arts and crafts booths and with other merchants. Since many of the merchants at Possum Hollow were local, most of this money will stay in Laurens County, Passmore said.

The $16,300 raised for Buckhorn Church came from gate receipts, food, drink and booth sales.

Gate receipts were $5,886. However, money from many advanced ticket sales is still out. Considering the 50 cent fee for ages 12 to six and the number of people who were involved in the fair and paid no admission, the crowd estimate of 10,000 is very close to accurate, Passmore observed.

No decision has been made whether there will be a Possum Hollow fair next year, but Passmore remarked, “I would welcome any suggestions from people or any constructive criticism in the event we do have another Possum Hollow.”

QUALIFYING BEGINS IN CITY ELECTIONS

By Doug Hall

Mayor Robert E. Cochran and Aldermen John Reed Deamer, Louis Alexander, and Glen Harden qualified this morning to run in the November 3 city election. So did two former City Hall figures.

Lena Opie, who resigned as city clerk this March after eleven years in the post, will oppose Alexander for the Ward Four seat.

And Buddy Adams, former alderman and mayoral candidate, will challenge Deamer in the Third Ward.

Roy Banks, who currently represents Ward Two, is not expected to seek re-election.

At press time, no one had qualified against Cochran for Mayor, nor against Harden and McLendon in council races for Wards One and Two.

Under a new election structure which will control city elections this November – if approved by a federal judge and the U.S. Justice Department – ward aldermen will be elected by just the residents of their wards. The mayor’s race will be at-large. All races will be decided on a plurality basis. There will be no run-offs.

A hearing is scheduled with Federal Judge Alexander Lawrence on Tuesday afternoon to ask for a consent decree to an agreement reached between city officials and attorneys for two Dublin blacks who challenged the city election method and fourteen annexations. If the Judge ad the Justice Department approve, the election will be settled.

Cochran, a 39-year-old Dublin businessman, is seeking his second term as the city’s highest elected official. He defeated former alderman Henry Raymaker by a large margin in winning the mayor’s office two years ago. Raymaker is rumored to be considering another try for the post during this election.

Aldermen Deamer and Alexander are also looking for their second terms in office. Deamer is principal of Northwest Laurens Elementary School at Millville and lives in Green Acres. Alexander owns a printing and office supply business and lives on Knox Street.

Harden, a former city policeman and convenience food store owner, is running for his third term. He lives on Hudson Drive.

McLendon, who works with the Laurens County School Board and operates a janitorial service, is making his first appearance in city politics. He lives on Goler Street.

Mrs. Opie began working with the ity in 1956 and was selected City Clerk in 1964. Since she resigned, she has worked with a local construction company. She lives on Roberson Street.

Adams served for two years on Council and then lost to former Mayor Lester Porter in the 1971 mayor’s race. He then served two more years as an at-large alderman, but did not seek re-election last year. Adams lives in North Dublin.

Qualifying for mayor and four ward aldermanic seats will be open through October 17, 1975.

Candidates must be 25 years of age, a resident of the city for twelve months, and a registered voter.

The last date to register to vote in the November 3 election is October 20.

BANKS COLLECT TAXES

Laurens County banks, or those outside of the City of Dublin, have turned tax collectors until December 20th. And it’s all for the convenience of tax payers, according to Tax Commissioner R.G. Neal.

The Bank of Dudley, Knight State Bank, Dexter; Citizens and Southern Bank of Rentz, and Farmers State Bank, Cadwell will accept tax payments from Laurens Countians for remittances to the Tax Commissioner.

But tax payers will need their tax bill sent to them this year to pay their taxes at the banks. The original will be marked “Paid,” while the remainder will be sent to the Tax Commissioner for county records.

The deadline for paying 1975 taxes is December 20th.

JOSEY CELEBRATES

Josey Christian Academy students celebrated their Homecoming last night when Miss Tammie Watson was crowned Homecoming Queen and the Warriors blanked the Effingham Academy Chiefs, 27-0 before one of the finest crowds in many home games.

The victory was the third against five defeats for the Warriors, coached by Barney Hester and Don McLemore, and the first time the Warriors have ever won three games in one season. The triumph also ran the Region 4-A SEAIS mark of the Warriors to 2-2.

Effingham, coached by two Dublinites, former Irish backfield star David Hobbs and John Watkins, is winless this season.

The Warriors scored on their first possession.

Playing for Josey were J. Aaron, R. Yates, T. Graham, Jim Graham, Jeff Graham, K. Aaron, Owens, Scott, D. Yates, Shepherd, Williams, Carter, Brown, Sapp, Windham, Dean.

Highlighting the Homecoming Week End was the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. Two 12th grade representatives were nominated, Miss Malehis Beacham, to be escorted by Allen Grizzard and Miss Tammie Watson, to be escorted by Bobby Clark.

8th grade – Lynn Carter and Kevin Beacham

9th grade – Kim Pullen and Ed Bush

10th grade – Vickie Renfroe and David Wilkes

FALCONS FALL IN FINAL SECOND

By Tony Johnson

In one of the most exciting and best games ever played by an East Laurens football team, the Falcons lost a last second thriller in the Region 3-A South leading Hawkinsville Red Devils, 22-20.

Leading 20-13 in the final quarter, the Falcons could not halt a nine-point splurge by the Red Devils, the winning points coming on a 25-yard field goal by Vince Huett, which sailed between the uprights as the final buzzer sounded.

Immediately, before the field goal, the officials called timeout for Huett, who was injured and left the field. But he returned without sitting out a play to kick the winning three points.

Falcon coach Jesse Dyess praised his entire squad for their efforts. “The kids played their hearts out and deserved to win,” Coach Dyess said. “I am proud of all of them. The Devils had the poise and know how in the clutch but had it not been for our two crucial fumbles we would have won.”

It is hard to lose this type of game, for it means so much to the kids. But this is not the end of the season; we have two more games to go, and our team will get better.”

Author

2025 marks Harriett’s 30th year “Looking Back” in weekly columns offering readers a glimpse at history through local news clippings gathered from years gone by. The former schoolteacher began writing “85 Years Ago,” which she inherited from late Dublin Courier Herald publisher W.H. Champion, in 1995. Eight years later, she added a companion feature entitled “50 Years Ago,” treating Dublin-Laurens County natives to a more recent taste of nostalgia. The columns appear, respectively, in each Saturday and Tuesday edition.
