COLORED NEWS

WPA Program

The program at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church was a success on Monday night.

A full house with both white and colored present.

Following the recital of the adult students, many of the white people spoke words encouraging to both teacher and pupils. We had present some of the white WPA teachers who also spoke on the program. The white people were interested in the program; each one made a donation to help buy wood and fuel to carry on such wonderful work.

We don’t find a pastor more interested in WPA program than Rev. J.G. Hogan and his good people who are very much pleased with the class in this section of the city – Christine Driskell, WPA teacher.

Jackson Street Chapel C.M.E.

To the members and friends of Jackson Chapel, you are cordially invited to be present to hear Rev. Wilson, the Presiding Elder of the Savannah District at 11:00 on Sunday morning and at 8:00 on Sunday night.

IRISH WIN GAME

     By Barney Price

Dublin High Irishmen drove home another victory last night in the Hargrove Gym when they downed the Sandersville cagers 43-20.

With Albert Clark taking the lead for the Irishmen, the Sandersville boys faded away in the first quarter, never to overcome the 12 points lead. With Clark cracking the basket in the first half for the locals, the Irishmen held an 18 point lead at the half.

In the second half the Sandersville cagers came back to make 14 points, but the Irish worked the ball under the basket for 21 points

Clark was the big noise for the locals last night. He sank 22 of the 43 points for the Irish. Thompson, who is playing first string basket ball this year, showed up very good last night against the visitors.

The game was more or less one-sided for the  Dublin Irishmen.

Author

2025 marks Harriett’s 30th year “Looking Back” in weekly columns offering readers a glimpse at history through local news clippings gathered from years gone by. The former schoolteacher began writing “85 Years Ago,” which she inherited from late Dublin Courier Herald publisher W.H. Champion, in 1995. Eight years later, she added a companion feature entitled “50 Years Ago,” treating Dublin-Laurens County natives to a more recent taste of nostalgia. The columns appear, respectively, in each Saturday and Tuesday edition.
