GUARDS OPEN

RECRUITING

Captain Clifford H. Prince, commanding officer of Company K of the Georgia National Guards, today opened recruiting headquarters in the company armory on Madison Street to boost the Dublin company’s strength from 66 to 83 members, as authorized by Adjutant General John Stoddard.

Captain Prince said that Sergeant Palmer Currell will be at the armory daily and will act as recruiting officer of the company.

Increases in Georgia national guard units, expected for some time, were authorized yesterday by Adjutant General Stoddard in a message to the annual convention of the National Guard Officers Association which was held at the high school auditorium here. General Stoddard said that figures he had received from the War Department in Washington authorized a hike in Georgia guardsmen to 5,069 enlisted men, an addition of 1,156.

The boosts, according to General Stoddard, would amount to about 32 per cent of present strength of enlisted men for Georgia units of the National Guard. No increase in the officer personnel of the guards has yet been ordered.

Total strength of the 121st Infantry, of which Col. L.C. Pope of Dublin is commanding officer and of which the two Dublin companies are a part, was hiked by 225 men. Rifle companies of the regiment were authorized to jump from the a 66 men at present to 83 enlisted men. The new increase will bring the strength of the121st Infantry to1,290 enlisted men.

No increase in strength was authorized for the other Dublin National Guard Company – Headquarters Company of theThird Battalion, of which Lieutenant R.L. Webb is commanding officer.

Colonel Pope, immediately upon the close of the officers’ meeting, urged unit commanders of the 121st Infantry  present to complete enlistments by the end of this week in order that the 121st Infantry may be one of the first in the state to report to the adjutant general’s office.

BOWLERS GET

REVENGE

After losing on the foreign alleys on Wednesday night to the Wrightsville team by a score of some 40-odd pins, the Dublin bowling team last night upset the visitors, coming out in front with 29 pins.

The sharp sooting of “Pa:” Hawkins in the last four boxes accounted for the locals’ victory. His “dead eye shooting” gave him the individual high scoring honors for Dublin, with a total of 324 to his credit.

L.B. Word was second to Hawkins with 306, and Glenn Brinson received the laurels for the Wrightsville visitors  with 310  pins to his credit.

The local team was composed of Allen Arnold, 85; L.B. Word, 306; Jimmie Donaldson, 275; Ted Wilhite, 271; Barney Price, 174; “Pa” Hawkins, 324.

Last week Dublin won from the Macon team, but lost to the Wrightsville outfit.

Author

2025 marks Harriett’s 30th year “Looking Back” in weekly columns offering readers a glimpse at history through local news clippings gathered from years gone by. The former schoolteacher began writing “85 Years Ago,” which she inherited from late Dublin Courier Herald publisher W.H. Champion, in 1995. Eight years later, she added a companion feature entitled “50 Years Ago,” treating Dublin-Laurens County natives to a more recent taste of nostalgia. The columns appear, respectively, in each Saturday and Tuesday edition.
