They are building a border wall in Wilkinson County, sort of.

Work continues on a stretch of US 441 in the southern part of the county, right around Mile Marker 4. The most important piece of the puzzle is a 20-foot border wall that’s designed to prevent another slope failure, according to Will Volk, a Georgia Department of Transportation spokesperson.

The stretch of highway has been an issue for several years. The original slope failure occurred in early 2020, and the DOT ultimately installed a concrete barrier that created one lane of southbound traffic.

The most recent project began in late September, when southbound traffic on 441 was re-routed into the northbound lane, thus creating a temporary two-lane road.

The plan is to have the project completed at some point in April or May, Volk added. This would include re-striping of the northbound lane, alongside the engineering work on the southbound side.
