Big plays put Brentwood up by a lot early; Trinity closes well, but can’t climb back

So far, Trinity’s home schedule has included nothing but state title-contending teams.

Friday’s homecoming game was no exception to the rule as likely the best of those so far, two-time defending AA state champion Brentwood, visited Cleve Warnock Field. 

The Crusaders put up valiant effort, but couldn’t fight out of an early hole as they fell to the Eagles 48-19.

Trinity got the ball first but couldn’t do much and was forced to punt. The punt was a good one to flip the field and pin the Eagles inside their own 20.

But Brentwood was unfazed by the bad field position. On its second play from scrimmage, Tristan Robinson ripped off a 77-yard touchdown to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead just four minutes into the contest.

Following another Trinity punt, Brentwood went to work again. Senior QB Baylor Cobb connected with Jackson Bragg on a 53-yard touchdown pass to put the Eagles up 14-0 with just under four minutes left in the opening period.

A third Crusader punt would set up another Robinson touchdown run, this time from 18 yards out, to make the score 21-0 after one quarter.

Trinity punted for a fourth time in as many drives on its next possession, and again the Eagles took advantage. Bragg would break off a 47-yard touchdown run to make it 28-0 early in the second quarter.

The Crusaders finally put a nice drive together on their next possession. They marched down the field and found paydirt as Jude Evans connected with Mason Lane on a 22-yard scoring pass with just under five minutes left in the half to make it 28-7.

Unfortunately, the Crusaders had no answer for Robinson as he added a 15-yard scoring run on the Eagles’ next drive and caught a 20-yard touchdown pass just before the half to make the score 41-7. 

Brentwood’s lead would grow to 48-7 on a Chase Daniel 49-yard run early in the second half.

Will-J Harris finished a long Trinity drive late in the third to make it 48-13, and Andrew Helton capped the scoring with his first career touchdown on a 10-yard run in the fourth. 

Harris led the way offensively with 116 yards on 16 carries for Trinity. Helton added 40 yards on just five carries and led the team with seven tackles. Evans finished 4-of-7 passing for 57 yards. Lane had two catches for 42 yards. 

Robinson was nearly unstoppable for the Eagles as the gained 127 yards on just 6 carries. He also had three catches for 41 yards.

The Crusaders (2-3 overall) are off next Friday, but will begin region play on September 25 at Gatewood. Brentwood continues its road swing this Friday at Lake Oconee Academy.
