Local Red Cross seeking water donations

The local American Red Cross is asking for water donations to help first responders as they deal with incidents over the summer.
Peggy Bentz, disaster specialist of the Red Cross Central Georgia Chapter, sent a photo showing that the organization was out of its supply of bottled water.
“We have water for our first responders to come and get, and we want to make sure that we keep that inventory there for them,” Bentz said. “That’s my main goal. So many of our firefighters in Laurens County are volunteers. We try to make sure they have water on hand. When they have that fire call, they don’t have time sometimes to stop and grab a case of water.”
Water can be dropped off underneath the carport at the Red Cross office, and officials will make sure it is distributed to where it needs to go. Businesses, churches, organizations or individuals can help out.
“We love our partnerships with everybody,” Bentz said. “It don’t have to be a bunch. The small packs help so much. Besides firefighters, this water may go to clients who lost a house and are staying in hotels.”
The Red Cross is also preparing for the upcoming hurricane season. Earlier this week, Red Cross volunteer Paul Williams inspected their equipment.
“Paul has been out cleaning our cots and making sure our shelter trailers are cleaned, stocked and ready to roll,” Bentz said. “We have to thank our volunteers who have stepped up to make sure we are ready when that time comes.”
The Red Cross has been working with Georgia Emergency Management who has pre-identified areas that will house the evacuees.
“We are always looking for shelter partners who are willing to help,” Bentz said. “It might be a big church gym who would be willing to let us use it if something happens. It doesn’t have to be a hurricane evacuation situation. It could be a tornado or other situation that we may need shelter.”
Those looking to help the local Red Cross, or to volunteer, can call (478) 275-1754.
