Loran Smith

A “Bulldog icon” sharing nearly inseparable ties with the University of Georgia, Loran writes sports and feature columns that appear weekly in The Courier Herald, and is the author of more than 15 books. The Wrightsville native, a Bulldog track and field captain in the late 1950s, has spent most of his professional life with UGA, holding various positions in  sports communications, business development, fundraising and broadcasting within the school’s athletic association, alongside his longtime function as athletics historian. Though retired from past roles as a coach’s show producer and sideline reporter, he remains a gameday fixture each football season as co-host of the Bulldog radio network’s “Tailgate Show.” He is a past chairman and 1997 inductee into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Loran and his wife Myrna live in Athens.
