BASKETBALL: Trinity finishes Fullington tournament with wins
The Crusaders swept their finales Friday, the girls against CCA and boys vs. Fullington, in the Wonder Five Centennial tip-off classic.
Trinity’s basketball teams returned to action Friday evening in Wonder Five Centennial tip-off at Fullington Academy.
The Crusader girls overcame a slow start to blow out Citizens Christian 61-23, while the boys dominated the host team from the opening tip as they cruised to their first win, 52-33.
The girls game was close early on as and the Lady Patriots actually led the contest 15-13 after one quarter.
The Lady Crusaders began to impose their will in quarter 2, exploding for 25 points while holding CCA to just five to take a 38-20 lead into the locker room.
Trinity would continue its stellar defense in the second half, holding the Lady Patriots to just three third-quarter points while scoring 16 of their own to go up 54-23.
The final quarter was only six minutes due to the mercy rule and Trinity held CCA scoreless to pull away further.
Brinley Vinson led four Lady Crusaders in doubled digits with 15. Chloe Rozier had 12, Maddy George added 11 and M.G. Alligood finished with 10. Trinity hit eight 3-pointers in the contest and improved to 4-1 on the season.
After falling behind early in their season opener on Thursday, the Crusader boys made sure they avoided that scenario in this one.
Trinity raced out to a 17-4 lead after one quarter and didn’t look back.
Its defense wasn’t quite as good in the second as Fullington scored 13. But the Crusaders extended their lead with 21 of their own to go up 38-17 at the half.
Much like the girls game, the Crusaders turned up the defensive pressure out of the locker room, holding the Trojans to just two points in the third. They would score 14 to extend the lead to 52-19.
The final quarter would also be shortened to six minutes, and the Crusader bench couldn’t get anything going offensively as they failed to score. The Trojans’ 14 made the final score more respectable.
Jagger George led the Crusaders with 13. Jamarion Ricks had 12 and Will Foskey added 11, all in the first half.
