Work will soon begin for a raised crosswalk across Woodlawn Drive, that will take about a week to complete once construction begins.

Work continued Tuesday on the new apartment complex called MGVG Living Dublin located on Woodlawn Drive between Hillcrest Parkway and Claxton Dairy Road. A sidewalk from the apartments will connect to a raised crosswalk that will allow pedestrians to traverse the three-lane street.

“As part of them building these apartments, the city asked them to include this in their work,” said Dublin Engineering Director Matthew Bradshaw. “The MGVG developer is paying for this. It will not be paid by the city.”

City Engineer James Ivey said it will take approximately one week to complete.

“They will have to demo the street, prepare the site, pour the concrete, let it sit and stripe it,” Ivey said.

A spokesperson for the developer said the crosswalk construction, and closing of this part of Woodlawn Drive, was scheduled to begin on Jan. 21.

“There is a lot of traffic on that road,” Bradshaw said. “We want people to know that this type of work is getting close to starting and we’ll keep them updated on the city’s social media.”

The main focus of this particular crosswalk is pedestrian safety. Because it will be raised, like the one at the back part of Moore Street School further up on Woodlawn Drive, the crosswalk will also help slow traffic down.

“We know the pedestrian traffic is going to increase with the new apartments and this is how the city is working to make it safer,” Bradshaw said. “This will help people get over to the sidewalks and then they can walk on a sidewalk for a long time because there are a lot of sidewalks in that area.”
