A man was seriously injured in a four-car wreck Wednesday afternoon in a construction zone on U.S. 441 South.

Paul Mulling Jr., whose age and address were unavailable at press time, was taken by ambulance to Fairview Park Hospital after his pickup truck was rear-ended near John Vaughn Road, the Georgia State Patrol said. Mulling was “unlikely to make it, according to (the) ER doctor’s statement,” the GSP said in a description of the accident.

The pileup happened about 2 p.m., in the middle of a stretch of U.S. 441 currently being prepped for a major widening project. Wednesday was the first day that the Georgia Department of Transportation had shifted traffic flow into two lanes, rather than four.

According to the state patrol, Mulling was driving a Dodge Ram pickup and had stopped for traffic ahead when his truck was struck from behind by another Dodge Ram, which then also hit an SUV and another pickup.

The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team, which typically investigates fatal accidents, was called in to assist troopers at the scene.
