New downtown median praised for stopping potentially bad wreck

The new downtown median on Jackson Street received some slight damage while stopping what had the potential to be a bad accident Tuesday night.
“It looks like the crosswalk did exactly like we hoped it would by keeping a car from going into on coming traffic or even hitting a parked car or pedestrians or any building for that matter,” said Dublin City Manager Josh Powell.
According to Powell, a woman was traveling with a child, heading toward the Laurens County Courthouse, and apparently she passed out while driving around 7:32 p.m. Tuesday. When the vehicle hit the curb to the median, it enabled her to regain control of it after traveling over both sections of the median.
“Thankfully all of that stopped her,” Powell said. “She was headed into oncoming traffic. It would have been really bad. It was busy there (that) night. Quite a few cars were going through that area around that time.”
The median was just completed a week ago.
“Some of the concrete is going to have to be redone,” Powell said. “But this median will create a buffer so that if somebody does cross over, it will protect that. I have noticed that trucks have slowed down and some have taken alternate routes instead of coming through the middle of town. Our hope is to slow everybody down, and we keep everybody protected.”
