Laurens County Commission awards bids for almost $3 million in roadwork

The Laurens County Commission awarded bids Tuesday to two companies for an estimated $2.9 million in road resurfacing projects.

The commission voted last month to complete the list of almost 20 road projects ahead of schedule after the Georgia Department of Transportation made available $250 million to local governments for road repair, as part of the governor’s amended state budget.

About $2 million came to Laurens County, and the county ponied up almost $1 million in local funding.

On Tuesday, the commission approved contractors for the projects, which were classified as either “non-subdivision roads” or “subdivision roads.”

Scruggs Co. was approved for non-subdivision road resurfacing, at $104.51 per pound of asphalt. That work is expected to be completed by August.

Sikes Brothers was awarded the bid for the shorter but more-expensive-to-resurface subdivision roads, at $140.53. Those projects were given a Nov. 1 deadline.

County Administrator Bryan Rogers noted the deadlines were shorter than most these days. The influx of state funding has more local governments bidding out projects, with them willing to give contractors more time to complete the work.

“The problem we’re running into with all the state money out there right now …is that most people are putting 12-month time frames on any project,” said Rogers. “You get your best prices that way.”

The county’s request for proposals included prices and completion times.
