MGCFB to hand out free food at Jeffersonville senior center next week

A free food truck is coming to Jeffersonville next week.

Twiggs County and the City of Jeffersonville are partnering to host a free food event at the Twiggs County Senior Center next Wednesday, Aug. 19, starting at 11 a.m.

The food truck is sponsored and operated by the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank, located on Ocmulgee East Boulevard. The Middle Georgia Community Action Agency is also collaborating with the city and county to help organize the event.

“With the price of groceries rising every day, [the food truck] will help not only a lot of seniors out, it will help the whole city and community,” said organizer and Jeffersonville City Councilwoman Laura Gallemore.

According to Gallemore, this is the first time the food bank has organized an event at the senior center, but she said she hopes to make this a regular thing. In the future, if things go her way, she said, the food bank will return every three months.

Food at the food truck will vary. The event is expected to last until 2 p.m.

Event organizers are also searching for volunteers.

Organizers ask that anyone interested in volunteering to contact Laura Gallemore at (478) 718-3519 or Ernestine Mims at (478) 718-2346, ahead of time. Volunteers can also call the senior center directly at (478) 945-3900 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily.

Gallemore told the TJP that she invites everyone in the community to come out next Wednesday, saying that “all are welcome.”

The Twiggs County Senior Center is located at 400 Bullard Road in Jeffersonville. 

On the day of the event, volunteers are asked to arrive at 10 a.m.

Line-up will start at 10:30 a.m.
