NEW GARBAGE PICKUP TRUCK AND CONTAINERS
The Laurens County Commissioners agreed to buy a front end loading garbage truck and 150 six cubic foot containers in a meeting this morning.
Bids were opened for the truck and containers in last week’s meeting and four bids were received. The truck is a Kenworth diesel- powered model with automatic transmission and air conditioning. It was bid by Truck Equipment Company in Atlanta for $36,953. The truck packing unit has a 31 cubic yard capacity. Delivery of the truck was set at thirty days.
The commissioners also approved the purchase of 150 garbage containers for trash collection. A bid by Consolidated Disposal System of Marietta of $43,200, approximately $288 apiece, was accepted by the commissioners. The containers will be delivered within thirty to forty-five days.
Both purchases are subject to the posting of a satisfactory performance bond by the dealers to assure that the county will receive the purchases within the time guaranteed.
These two purchases will be paid with revenue sharing funds.

GOLD STAR MOTHERS HONORED
The American Legion Post No. 17 and Auxiliary met jointly for the monthly May meeting on Tuesday at the Post Home with Chaplain E.A. Ehlers of the V.A. Center presiding. He opened the session with the invocation by Rev. C.E. Vines, followed with the Pledge to the Flag. The National Anthem was sung, led by Mrs. M.Z. Claxton, accompanied by Mrs. Milo Smith.
Mr. M.G. Combs, Past Commander, commended the Gold Star Mothers present. He, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Elizabeth Sewell presented corsages to them. They were Mrs. Nellie Powell, Mrs. G.C. Bidgood, Mrs. Carlos Horton, Mrs. Jessie Jordan, Mrs. White Perry, Mrs. Nellie Powell, and Mrs. L.B. Word.
An impressive memorial service was then conducted by Chaplain Vines and Mrs. W.F. Govreau for deceased Veterans and Auxiliary members of the past year.
Veterans included E. Herman Balsley, James V. Hunt, Mrs. Marjo Hummel, Herman Cato, R.H. Hightower, Sr., Judge Palmer W. Hicks, Milo Smith,Sr., F. Roy Orr, and Guy V. Cochran.
Auxiliary members who have died during the last year include Mrs. Dele Rawls (Joe) Phillips and Mrs. J.M. Lewis, both of whom were past District Presidents.
Veterans who were mentioned due to illness were General Flannery Pope, Chaplain Jack Stafford, Post Commander Floyd Horton, and William C. Dover, Vice Commander.
Mrs. Prentis Green, Sr., Chairman of the Auxiliary Nominating Committee, presented the slate of officers for the 1974-75 year. They are Mrs. Elizabeth Sewell, President; Mrs. Milo Smith, 1st Vice President; Mrs. Joe Harrison, 2nd Vice President; Recording Secretary; Mrs. J.E Sammons; Corresponding Secretary, Mrs.Guy Scarborough, Treasurer; Mrs. William Dover; Sgt.at Arms, Mrs. Miriam Holzen; Historian, Mrs. George Harper, Parliamentarian, Mrs. W.F. Govreau; and Chaplain, Mrs. George C. Daniel.

WEST LAURENS FIELD SEEDED
The playing surface of the new West Laurens football stadium will be seeded this afternoon with Tift 57 variety grass as West Laurens officials and supporters push to have the stadium ready for play this fall.The Raiders’ first home game of the 1974 season is September 20 against Vidalia.
This morning LaRue Fountain, school board member, left for Tifton to pick up the seed bought for the new stadium. The seed will be scattered over the playing surface this afternoon and turned under with an upright disc harrow.
A ten-head irrigation system has been installed, and fertilizer has been donated for the field.
Until now, the problem has been one of time, according to head football coach Al Manning, but the problem of money now faces the stadium builders with time being less important.
The stadium drive has received generous support from businesses all over Laurens County, Manning said. A fund raising committee, headed by Cecil Passmore, has split the county into sections, and area coordinators are conducting a door-to-door campaign of homes and businesses to raise the money for the stadium.
“We hope that this stadium will be a community facility, which can be used for more purposes than football games,” Manning stated.
A goal of $25,000 has been set in the fund raising campaign.
Other work which still faces the stadium builders is the completion of a bank for visitors’ bleachers, bleacher construction, installing light poles, putting up a chain link fence around the stadium, building concession stands, press box, and field house, and putting up goal posts.
Lights have been ordered for the stadium but will not be installed until the cement bleachers are poured. County equipment is working on the large bank, and it should be completed by Monday.
Manning praised the community support which has rallied around building the stadium, but stressed that a great deal of work lies ahead before the Raiders can realize their dream of playing on their own home field this fall.

MALONE FAMILY REUNION
The family of the late A.C. Malone, Sr. attended services at the Mount Carmel Baptist Church where Mrs. Malone was presented with a corsage for being the oldest mother present; she is 85.
Following this church service, four generations had dinner at the home of Mrs. Malone on Malone Lake.

EAST LAURENS BEGINNING BAND
The East Laurens Beginning Band presented a concert for their parents on Friday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the East Laurens Elementary School cafeteria. This concert culminated the trial period for these students who had started the beginning instrumental program in January.
Of the several numbers presented for the parents’ enjoyment, a trumpet solo, “Jesus Christ, Super Star” played by Teasa Hansen, was the highlight of the program.
Archie McAfee, band director,talked to the parents about their responsibilities as band parents.

RELIGIOUS CONVENTION HERE
The Church of Jesus Christ, Georgia District, will hold its 1974 Georgia State Convention at the Laurens County Agriculture Center on Telfair Street, U.S. 441 South,. The convention will begin on Friday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. and continue through Saturday, May 18.
Services scheduled for the Convention will be Friday, Call to Order by Bishop R.W. Sapp at 7:30 p.m and services at 8:00, breakfast at 8:10 a.m; morning service at 10:00; Ladies Auxiliary Service, 12:00 noon; dinner; 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Choir practice will be at 7:00 p.m. with the evening youth service at 7:00 p.m. and final service of the convention at 8:00 p.m.
The general public is invited to all of the services which are to be held during the 1974 convention .
Representatives from the Church of Jesus Christ in Georgia as well as out of state guests are expected. Bishop R.W. Sapp, the Georgia State Bishop, has been informed that the International World Presiding Bishop B.C. Lawson from the church headquarters in Cleveland, Tennessee, will be present for the Saturday services.
The Faith Choir from the Church of Jesus Christ in Cleveland, Tennessee, will be present to sing for the Saturday services. Evangelist Marquitta Tigue, well known evangelist in the North and Southeast, will preach during the convention.

MALL’S MOTHER OF YEAR
Mrs. Carl Cromer was named Dublin Mall’s Mother of the Year on Saturday and was presented a number of special gifts from mall merchants to honor her selection. Mrs. Cromer was chosen in the contest which asked children to state in 25 words or less why their mother should be the Mother of the Year.
Mrs. Cromer’s son, Wayne, entered the winning essay.
The gifts were presented to her by Gay Nell Hagler and Danny Beasley of the Dublin Mall Merchants Association.

SORORITY OFFICERS INSTALLED
Delta Delta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met on Monday night at the Laurens County Library with Mrs. Joel Radney, President, leading in the Opening Ritual. She read a thank you note from Miss Essie Mae Cobb, Woman of the Year.
The Roll was called by Mrs. Harold Alligood. The speaker for the program, Dr. George Anderson, was introduced by Mrs. Lee Henderson, Program Chairman. He spoke on “Thought.”
As outgoing President, Mrs. Radney presented charms in appreciation for their service to these officers who had served with her: Mrs. Baker Edmisten, Mrs. Tommy Coleman, Mrs. Harold Alligood, Mrs. Ed Martin, Mrs. David Stone, and Mrs. John Deamer.
The new officers were introduced and are Mrs. Bert Whitehead, President; Mrs. Tommy coleman, First Vice President; Mrs. Robley Rigdon, Second Vice President; Mrs. Joyce Toole, Recording Secretary; Mrs. Bill Reeder, Corresponding Secretary; Mrs. David Stone, Treasurer; and Mrs. Jack Brantley, Parliamentarian.
Mrs. Ed Martin presented a gift from the members to Mrs. Radney in appreciation for her service to the sorority.

MARRIAGE
Mrs. Helen Hodges Jackson and Ernest Everette Walker were united in marriage in a double ring ceremony on Friday evening at the home of the bride at 206 Pinehurst Drive.
Mrs. Walker is the daughter of Mrs Tom Hodges and the late Mr. Hodges of this city. Mr. Walker is the son of Mrs. E.H. Walker and the late Mr. Walker, also of this city.
The officiating minister was the Rev. Jimmy R. Smith, and Mrs. Ruth Fleming provided a program of nuptial music during the ceremony and at the reception.
After a wedding trip the couple is making their hone on Pinehurst Drive, Dublin.

DHS SAGE MEETS
Members of SAGE (Student Action for Georgia Education), formerly Future Teachers of America, of Dublin High School held the final meeting of the school year with a cook-out at the home of Calli Patterson on Edgewood Drive.
The outgoing officers for SAGE are Carol Fitzgerald, President; Rena Cromer, Vice President; Calli Patterson, Secretary; Mary Kay Andre, Treasurer; Janet Taylor, Historian and Reporter.
Incoming officers are Candy Spicer, President; Patti Barbee, Vice President; Vicki Browning, Secretary; Jean Trollinger, Treasurer; Jan Kibler, Historian and Reporter.
Nrs. Sarah Frost and Mrs. Bobbye Yauck are the group’s sponsors.

COUNTY SCHOOLS EXAMS
J.M. Warren, Jr., J. Alex Woodard, and Ed Martin, principals of the high schools of the Laurens County School System, released the test schedule for high school final exams. Tests will be two hours each.
On Monday, May 27, the first period exam will be given in first and second periods, and the fifth period exam will be given during third and fourth periods.
On Tuesday, May 28, the second period exam will be given during the first and second periods, and the fourth period exam will be given during third and fourth periods.
On Wednesday, May 29, the third period exam will be given during the first and second period, and the sixth period exam will be given during third and fourth periods.
Students may leave school at the end of fourth period if they provide their own transportation. Bus schedules will remain as they are now n order to accommodate the elementary schools.
Lunch will be served to all students who want it on these exam days.
Report cards will go out on Friday, May 31. School buses will run that day to bring students to pick up their report cards.
Students will report to homeroom on regular schedule. Any outstanding obligations – such as book fines or damage fines – must be paid before report cards are issued. After cards are issued, students will be dismissed, and buses will take students home.
Graduation exercises are set for East Laurens High School on May 30 and for West Laurens High School on May 31.

ENGAGEMENTS
Young – Dixon
Mr, and Mrs, Paul Young of Cedar Grove announce the engagement of their daughter, Paula Jean, to Samuel Wayne Dixon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Covis Dixon, also of Cedar Grove.
Miss Young is a graduate of Laurens High School and of Middle Georgia College. In June she will receive a B.S. Degree in Criminal Justice from Georgia Southern College.
Mr. Dixon is a graduate of Laurens High School and of Middle Georgia College. He is presently employed at J.P. Stevens, Co., Inc.
The wedding will be August 3 at 5:00 p.m. at the Cedar Grove United Methodist Church with a reception to follow. All friends and relatives are cordially invited to attend.
Peters – Harrison
Mrs. Thomas Peters, Jr. announces the engagement of her daughter, Susan, to Larry Edward Harrison, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bennie A. Harrison.
The bride-elect is the daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Peters, Jr. She graduated from Dublin High School and from Georgia Southern College with a B.B. Degree in Elementary Education.
She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and is now associated with the Dublin City School System.
The groom-to-be graduated from Dublin High School and from Georgia Southern College with a BBA Degree in Accounting. He is presently with the Internal Revenue Service in Albany.
The wedding will be held on Saturday, July 20, at the First Baptist Church.
White – Braddy
Mr. and Mrs.Wayne White of Cedar Grove announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Shelia, to Gregory Allen Braddy, son of Mr.and Mrs. Hyman Braddy of Soperton.
Miss White is a graduate of West Laurens High School. Mr. Braddy is a graduate of Treutlen County High School and is employed by Gilman Paper Company of Soperton.
The wedding will be on July 27 at 3:00 p.m. at the Union Springs Baptist Church. All friends and relatives are invited to attend.
Evans – Watson
Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Evans announce the engagement of their daughter, Sharon Renee, to Dennis Lee Watson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Grady W. Watson of Dublin.
Miss Evans is a 1972 graduate of Dublin High School and is now employed by the Laurens Park Mill.
Her fiance is a 1971 graduate of Laurens High School and is also with the Laurens Park Mill.
The wedding is planned for June 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. No formal invitations will be sent, but all friends and relatives are invited to attend. A reception will be held immediately following the ceremony in the church social hall.

UNIQUE SOCIETY AFFAIR
On April 19, 1974, the Unique Progressive Society held it Annual Debutante’s Affair at the National Guard Armory.
The Society chose the theme, “Put a Little Love in Your Heart” for the occasion. To carry out the theme, decorations of red and white were used.
Seven young ladies made their debut – a formal introduction to society. Miss Whilhemenia Cummings, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Cummings was crowned Miss Debutante of 1974.
First runner-up was Miss Deborah Smith, daughter of Mrs. Rosetta Smith, and second runner–up was Miss Evelyn Brown, daughter of Mrs. Louise Brown.
Other participants were Donnelle Phllips, Diana Spikes, Rosetta Pittman, and Gloria Mincey.
