A Soperton man was airlifted to a Macon hospital by Air Evac after his vehicle was hit head-on around 12:15 p.m. Monday on Ga. 29.
Venneth Norfleet was driving a Honda Odyssey, heading north on Ga. 29 when a newer-model Chevrolet Blazer SUV, driven by Shawn Schmittel, of Soperton, was traveling south on the same road, according to Glenn Altman, Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class 3.
“The Chevrolet Blazer crossed the center line and struck the Honda Odyssey in a head-on manner,” Altman said. “Both vehicles rotated in a counterclockwise motion.”
The Honda came to a final rest in the northbound lane. The Chevrolet eventually went off the road and hit a tree and remained in the ditch.
“The driver of the Honda Odyssey was flown to the Navicent Health Medical Center,” Altman said. “As of right now, there are no life-threatening injuries in the crash.”
Schmittel and a passenger in the Honda were transported to Fairview Park Hospital by EMS.
The reason for the vehicle crossing the center line was unknown as of a few hours after the wreck. Altman did say charges were pending.
