Driver crashes into mattress on I-16 in Laurens County

Woman traveling through Laurens County on I-16 runs into mattress.

People traveling on I-16 at 1:05 a.m. may think about stopping to get some rest, but they never think they are going to see a bed before they get off an exit.

But that is what happened to a woman traveling in a 70 mph zone through Laurens County on I-16 West around mile marker 50 on June 15.

According to a Laurens County Sheriff’s Office report, the woman was heading down the interstate in a 2017 Honda Accord when it struck a mattress that had been abandoned in the middle of the road.

The deputy met with the woman who first believed she had hit a pedestrian, but was thankful it turned out she had struck a mattress.

Unfortunately, her vehicle was not able to be driven away. The mattress caused damage to the Honda’s front bumper, detaching it from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed away and the deputy removed debris from the interstate.

The woman declined medical assistance.
