A day after the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate an officer-involved shooting, the sheriff’s office sent out a response to what happened that caused their deputy to fire at a man trying to run away.

In the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office’s response, a deputy saw man later identified as Charles Daniel McMahan, 36, of Dublin, riding a bicycle on Firetower Road. The deputy was aware of recent attempted burglaries and trespassing in the area, involving a man riding a bicycle. The deputy tried to make contact with the man.

When the deputy approached, the man ran away into the woods. During the foot chase, the suspect threatened to shoot the deputy. Two additional deputies arrived and all three eventually caught up with the man.

The suspect then produced an object and pointed it toward the deputies and ordered them to back away. The deputies repeatedly commanded the man to drop the object, but he refused. One deputy fired two shots toward the man and the suspect threw the object on the ground. Neither shot hit the suspect.

Deputies arrested McMahan who later told investigators that he used the “object” in an attempt to make deputies believe he was armed by holding it like a gun and pointing it at the deputies. McMahan said he was attempting to provoke deputies into taking his life.

The GBI continues its investigation because of the use of force situation, which is standard procedure. When the investigation is completed, the case file will be sent to the Dublin Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
