Our Take: Watch for road work during summer travels

The summer travel season is in full swing, and it appears that more Georgians than ever are taking to our streets and highways for a vacation this year. 

According to the non-profit vehicle service and travel advocacy group AAA about 1.2 million Georgians got behind the wheel of a car and drove at least 50 miles during the Memorial Day weekend, which marks the unofficial start of the summer travel season. That figure is up from 1.1 million motorists the year before and is well above pre-pandemic travel levels. It is safe to say that people are enjoying the freedom of the open road, even if gas prices remain on the high end. 

But there is something else going on our roads as well – work. No matter where you are in Dublin, Laurens County, you don’t have to drive far to come upon a crew either making repairs, repaving the street or even changing the flow of traffic. Several major projects are going on around town that drivers need to be on the lookout for.

The Georgia Central Railway is undergoing a massive upgrade to their lines in the area and having to redo railroad crossings along the way. Upgrades have already happened in Dudley and Dublin this week. Crews just wrapped up work in downtown moving toward the east side. 

Speaking of East Dublin, work continues on the new roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 80 and Bethlehem Church Road/Lovett Farm Road. Signs are in place warning motorists of an upcoming shift in traffic lanes as workers continue to construct the massive new traffic circle, which we help will ease traffic going to and from the East Laurens school campuses. 

The City of Dublin is in the beginning stages of a massive streetscape project on Madison Street. Work to bury the utility lines has begun. Things have quieted for now though drivers can expect closures and delays in the future as the city seeks to improve that corridor of downtown Dublin.

Wherever you may find yourself on the road this summer be safe out there. Watch for other motorists and be mindful to the workers trying to make an honest living by keeping our roads and streets in tip-top shape.
