BASEBALL: Evans excels on mound, at plate as Trinity hangs on to complete sweep of Windsor

The Trinity Crusaders and the Windsor Knights finished their series Friday night as the Crusaders got the 2-1 win in a pitchers duel between Asher Evans and Blayne Bennett.

Trinity got on the board first in the bottom of the first as Evans helped his own cause with a solo homer to left to put the Crusaders up 1-0.

They were able to add to the lead in the second. Kolbi Grooms singled with one out to get the rally started. Following a fielder’s choice by Andrew Helton, Blake Sims singled with two away. 

Alston Bryan came up next and tried to bunt his way on. The throw to first got away, allowing Helton to score to make it 2-0.

Windsor would finally get on the board in the fifth, getting a pair of one out singles and eventually scoring a run on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.

Evans allowed a one-out double in the sixth, but got out of the jam with a groundout and a strikeout to close the frame.

He seemed to get stronger as the game progressed and struck out the side in the seventh to preserve the one-run win.

Evans, Sims, Grooms and Bryan had Trinity’s only four hits. Evans went the distance, scattering five hits and one run. He struck out 11 and didn’t walk a batter.

Bennett surrendered four hits and allowed just one earned run in his six innings. He pitched to contact all night, and didn’t walk or strike out a batter.

Trinity will face Stratford Academy Monday before starting another region series with Central Fellowship on Tuesday.
