Crash in Twiggs County leaves 1 dead

A Macon woman was pronounced dead Monday evening following a single-vehicle car crash.

Tara Sue Johnson, 50, was identified as the driver by officials.

According to a report by the Georgia State Patrol, Johnson was traveling north along Highway 18 at 6:12 p.m. when she left the roadway and struck a tree, causing her death. Officers arrived on scene minutes later.

Officers found that Johnson was reportedly traveling “too fast for the conditions of the road,” according to the report, causing her to leave the roadway on the east shoulder and begin spinning out.

At the time of the incident, Johnson was driving a white GMC Yukon XL.

Once the car left the roadway, the Yukon continued to rotate with Johnson inside of it, traveling 77 feet from the road where it ultimately made contact with a tree, stopping the car.

No other injuries were reported. 

A celebration of life ceremony was held for Johnson on July 25 at Gray Memorial Chapel, where family requested visitors to “wear bright colors as a celebration of her beautiful spirit and the happiness she shared with everyone around her.”
