Twiggs County interim superintendent reappointed for 2026-27 school year

Twiggs County Interim Superintendent Tyrone Bacon will continue to serve as interim superintendent throughout the 2026-27 school year, Twiggs County Public Schools announced Thursday.

The Board of Education made the decision to reappoint Bacon to serve in his current role until the end of the school year in 2027, when he says he plans to retire.

Bacon addressed the board’s decision on social media.

“I am grateful to the Twiggs County Board of Education for the confidence they have placed in me to continue serving as Interim Superintendent for the 2026-2027 school year,” Bacon wrote. “This decision provides the stability and continuity our district needs as we address our financial challenges and continue building a stronger future for our students, employees, families, and community.”

According to Bacon, his role as interim superintendent will come to an end at the completion of the school year.

“I…want to be transparent that I plan to retire at the conclusion of the 2026–2027 school year. Until then, my focus will remain on preparing this district and its people for the future,” he wrote.

“Over the past 14 years, I have grown to deeply love and respect the people of this school system and community,” he continued. “Twiggs County Public Schools has given much to me and my family, and I am grateful for every opportunity I have had to serve.”

Bacon officially took on the role of interim superintendent earlier this year after previous superintendent Mack Bullard retired in December.

Since it was announced he would be taking on the role, Bacon has heavily focused on tackling the district’s financial problems, including a $1.1 million deficit Bacon said incurred over several years.

As a result, he and board implemented two plans they said were intended to “restor(e) the district’s financial health,” including a Corrective Action Plan and a Deficit Elimination Plan. 

According to Bacon, he will remain focused on reducing the district’s financial problems throughout the remainder of his term, including eliminating debt and working to complete past-due audits.
